IMDA’s 2007 mid term strategic review, the interim findings of the High level Manufacturing Group and the interim findings of the Forfás Expert Skills Group on future skills needs of the sector (all of which IMDA participates on) clearly identifies that production operators require more technical skills now and in the future. Falling numbers of graduates exiting mechanical engineering and electronic engineering education at Levels 6 and 7 mean that many companies are faced with up-skilling operators to meet demands.
Companies have indicated that the major challenge for them in training operators is finding a model that enables them not to disrupt manufacturing. The IMDA Manufacturing Excellence Skillnet allows companies to release small numbers of operators from the floor for short bursts of relevant training activity that will be followed up back on the floor to show relevance. A full assessment of learning will take place there after.

In addition, most of the current lean and six sigma programmes that are available are focused at middle to senior level management. This programme will focus on operators to support and complement initiatives at higher levels. This programme will also be developed to take into account the specific needs of the medical device and diagnostic sector, making the training more relevant for operators.
